Changing MY World with NVC
From a Backpackers in Nairobi, Kenya: It was 2 o’clock in the morning and I was going crazy tossing and turning in my bed. There was a night club or a party going on next door, playing very loud doof and rap music, and I HAD HAD ENOUGH! I was just about to go and complain to the manager and get him to call the police. My jackals were raging. Some people are trying to get some sleep around here! Some people have to go to work in the morning!
Then I decided to connect with myself. I consciously let my jackals run a little while longer, and then asked myself what I was feeling and needing. Obviously I was furious, but suddenly another feeling popped up out of the blue. I was scared. I was afraid because I had made an appointment to call someone in the morning, and I had broken this appointment two times before. I was very scared of it happening again.
So next I asked myself what I was needing, and of course it was SAFETY. As soon as I had this realisation, the next thing I knew I was waking up in the morning, fully refreshed, in time to make my call.
Clearly, flagging to myself that I needed safety was enough for my whole body to relax, abandon its resistance to the loud music, and fall asleep.
When I realised all that, I sat in awe of this simple process.
Ain’t this NVC stuff amazing?
